Deakin Street Upgrade
Construction Progress: October 2024
Project Summary
CWC delivered the pre-construction services for the pavement upgrade of 450m of Deakin Street between Mitchell Avenue and Stanford Street in Kurri Kurri, NSW.
The project involved significant collaboration with Cessnock City Council to work through numerous pavement options to satisfy community consultation outcomes, geometric requirements and new watermain infrastructure requirements. The main project constraint included integration of an upgraded pavement design that minimised existing surface water/stormwater issues on residential properties, all in accordance with community concerns and within the allocated budget.
The project is broken into stages for the construction phase, being:
Stage 1 – Western end of the project from CH10 to 235
Stage 2 – Eastern end from CH235 to End (including watermain and gas service relocations)
CWC were required to, as part of the detailed design phase, liaise with Hunter Water Corporation to produce a feasible watermain relocation design. Careful consideration was required during this stage to ensure minimal impact to existing services and nature strip features (kerbs, trees, driveways, fences, etc.) could be achieved. CWC also identified the need to relocate three gas services that crossed Deakin St due to their proximity to the upgraded pavement depth. The consultation, design and review process with Jemena Gas was completed in-house as part of the detailed design.
Both relocation designs were heavily considered we discussions were held with Cessnock City Council regarding construction staging phases and boundaries for the project.
